Andy Arn takes over AD, boys basketball head coach positions at St. Patrick

ndy Arn, who worked on former boys basketball coach Jason Hinson's staff for the past three years, has taken over the program, and is also the new athletic director at St. Patrick High School.

'I wasn't really looking for either job, but when they came open, I felt an obligation and a loyalty to the school and the boys I've been coaching,' Arn said. 'I love St. Patrick and the AD job is something I've always wanted to do as well, even though there is no question It's a lot of work.'

Arn, 33, his wife Katy, four-year-old daughter Alex, and one year-old daughter Sydney reside in Ohio, where Arn attended Georgetown High School and Shawnee State University.

He began his coaching career at his alma mater as head baseball coach at Georgetown from 2000-2002. Arn then spent five years at St. Michael's in Ripley, where he started both the boys and girls basketball programs.

Arn currently heads up the Social Studies department at St. Patrick, where in addition to his other two positions, he teaches government and history.

To say that he is a busy man would be a huge understatement, but Arn is looking forward to the challenge.

'I really enjoy it here at St. Patrick, and the school is geared to my personality,' he said. 'I really enjoyed coaching with Jason, and he will be missed greatly. We're still close friends, and I learned a lot from him.'

As for a set basketball philosophy, Arn said he is flexible, depending on what kind of talent is on hand at a particular time.

'Being at a small school, you don't really have the luxury of implementing a set system,' said Arn. 'I plan to build around the players we have, and attempt to get them as prepared as possible. The biggest thing to me is getting these young men to become good citizens in the community. I want the boys to carry themselves with class when they're out in public, and to represent the right way. The main reason I got into coaching is because you have the opportunity to develop close relationships with young men outside of the classroom, and be a positive influence on them.'

The new coach is also excited about the returning core of players at St. Patrick, including inside performers Stephen Mason and Lee Gallenstein.

'With Stephen and Lee coming back, and a lot of young guards on the outside, I feel we will be pretty good,' Arn said. 'We will have a bunch of guards to choose from, including Ryan Gallenstein, who did a good job as a freshman last year. We're really deep at that position, and I'm expecting 25-30 kids to come out. I was worried about where the boys' heads would be after Jason left, but after he talked with them, they were fine, and looking forward to the future.'

Arn describes himself as a fiery coach, who 'really gets into it during games,' but added that he doesn't see himself earning too many technical fouls.

He also said he is learning more about the athletic director duties every day, but he is pleased that both the boys and girls soccer teams will continue to play their home games at the Tom Browning Boys & Girls Club, and practice at Wald Park.

'As the athletic director, I want to move all of our programs forward, and it would be nice to have our own place to practice and play,' said Arn. 'But with the current budget crunch, we just have to do the best we can.'
